While it is only one game, it could go a long way in defining the season for the San Diego Chargers.

QB Philip Rivers made his first and last visit to The Meadowlands a memorable one (stadium will be demolished after the season), leading an 80-yard drive in the final minutes of the game, as San Diego left New Jersey Sunday evening with a 21-20 victory. The win moves San Diego to 5-3 on the season, while New York dropped its fourth straight to fall to 5-4.

After the Giants looked like they had the game put away on an interception of Rivers, the drive stalled and New York had to settle for a field goal to make it 20-14.

Rivers then led the Chargers down the field, where he hit Vincent Jackson in the corner of the end zone on an 18-yard pass to tie the game (Nate Kaeding PAT).

New York, which had gotten off to a 5-0 start, saw its hopes of a last-minute comeback fade when Shawne Merriman sacked QB Eli Manning on the game's final play.

Heading into its bye week, New York must come up with a winning formula, as they are guaranteed to trail either the Dallas Cowboys or Philadelphia Eagles in the NFC East standings as those two meet this evening in Philadelphia.

For San Diego, meantime, a Denver loss Monday night at home against Pittsburgh would cut Denver's lead in the AFC West to one game over San Diego. Those two teams will meet Nov. 22 in the Mile High City.

Forever linked in the 2004 trade that sent them to their respective teams, Rivers outdid Manning on this day when it counted. Rivers was 24-of-36 for 209 yards and three touchdowns, as San Diego scored one of its biggest victories in Rivers' career.

As for New York, looks like those first five wins were just a tease for those fans who thought this team had a good shot of getting to Miami come February.

San Diego returns home to host Philadelphia on Sunday (Nov. 15) at 1:15 p.m.
