Job layoffs, home foreclosures and soaring prices are forcing thousands of families and senior citizens to turn to the San Diego Food Bank for help.
As the community’s safety net, the San Diego Food Bank helps put food on the table when times are tough, but the huge surge in demand has left the Food Bank handing out more food than it receives in donations.
The Food Bank helps families; families like Susan’s. Susan works as a secretary. Her husband worked in construction until he was laid off. While her husband looks for work, the family must survive on Susan’s paycheck. But Susan makes too much for the family to qualify for Food Stamps, and recently they were faced with a tough choice: pay the rent or feed their two young boys.
Fortunately, due to the generosity of Chargers fans, Susan’s family and others like hers will be able to receive food from the San Diego Food Bank. Food and monetary donations received as part of the Chargers Annual Food Drive will put food on the table at Susan’s home, and the Food Bank will be able to help her family until they get back on their feet.
This holiday season will again be one of the toughest in decades, and the continuing economic crisis has depleted the Food Bank’s supplies.
Charger fans and the community can help make a huge difference for families this holiday season by donating non-perishable food items at participating local Vons stores. Every can of food the Food Bank receives means children, like Susan’s sons, won’t have to go to bed hungry.
