Say it's a Thursday night and you don't have a car and you need a way to get up to Tahoe for the weekend. Or, you drive an SUV with a ton of extra room and you don't want to take the 3 hour drive by yourself. You're in luck because here in Northern Californina there are several options for alternative travel to and from Lake Tahoe.

The first and in my opinion best option, would be Craigslist Rideshare. Located in the community section of the SF Bay Area page is the rideshare link. Once you get there you can filter results by typing in "Tahoe" or "North Lake" or "South Lake" or other variations depending on what ski areas you want to visit. You may also want to type in "Reno" or visit the Reno Tahoe Rideshare see more results. Once you've found some possibilities, send out emails to touch base and confirm that the travel dates and times are indeed correct. You may also consider asking for a Facebook or CouchSurfing page to get some background and references on your possible travelling friends. Once you get a return email and make sure to ask for a phone number for last minute confirmations and/or changes. You should also offer to put in for gas money ($20 or so) at this point. Once all the details are worked out, meet up with your ride and enjoy the easy drive to the Sierras.

Another rideshare opportunity can be found on the Alpine Meadows Rideshare Board. This is a similar concept to CL rideshare except there is a calender you can check to see if their are rides offered or rides needed. This option will most likely work best if you are traveling to the north shore or Truckee. The advantage this board has is you can post a ride or ride needed well in advance and not have to worry about your post getting lost in the clutter of others' posts. If you can't find a match on this site you can also check out similar rideshare boards on other ski area's websites.

If your ridshare falls through, there are still other alternatives. Consider taking Amtrak's California Zephyr train from Emeryville to Truckee. Greyhound also offers a bus ride from the SF Transbay  Terminal to Truckee. These options both cost around $40 one way- but are a sure bet.

This winter, consider looking outside of your personal vehicle for transportation to Lake Tahoe to cut cost, carbon emissions, and pollution; and make some new friends and skiing buddies along the way.
