Starting seeds indoors

Frugal gardening. The two words seem to go together, don't they? In actuality, gardening is big business. From the minute that the New Year's frou frou is put away, the seed displays and mysterious brown pellet things start showing up.

You can spend hundreds of dollars, a few bucks at t time, until spring rolls around. Not thrifty and certainly not green living. This challenge is worth the effort. There is nothing like your own fresh produce, grown  from seed, for pennies.

Here are few steps for growing a garden, on the cheap.

  1. Plan your garden. Start small, and choose your favorite 5 things to grow. They could be herbs, veggies or a combination of both. The idea is that you are growing only what you will want to eat. No sense growing 3 types of radishes just because they are easy, if you hate radishes.
  2. Save things to grow seed in. Egg cartons, make your own seed pots from newspaper, yogurt cups. All these things will make perfect and free containers for seeds to get a healthy start.
  3. Buy only what you have to. Buy seed starting mix, seeds and a garden notebook.  Ask a friend if they want to split the cost of seeds and starting mix. You many not need the whole bag or carton yourself. Make a garden party!

Growing a garden is not a daunting task. If you don't like the idea of digging or don't have room, grow the entire thing in containers! There are bushing varieties of most vegetables that do excellent in a container. Spend a couple of minutes a day watering and looking for weeds, before  you know it, you will have practically free food.
