Home Beauty Remedy of the Week: Olive Oil

Olive oil is a common staple that is good for your heart, home and beauty.

Although there are many household uses for olive oil, this staple can get pretty expensive, so I like to narrow my uses down to mainly cooking.   That way I get the most benefit of taste and healthy mono-saturated fats into my diet.

But out of the multiple beauty uses of olive oil's moisturizing properties, below are my favorites:

  1. Mix Olive oil with lavender for a relaxing effect at night.   Pour half of the mixture into your bath water to soak.  Take the other half and add Kosher salt to make an extremely  moisturizing scrub for your hands, knees and elbows.
  2. Use it as a hot oil treatment for your scalp.  Massage a little olive oil to your scalp and spread a little down to the ends of your hair.  Wrap a warm towel around your hair for about 10 minutes.  Then rinse with a  moisturizing shampoo.
  3. While cooking, add a small amount to your nails.  It works great as cuticle oil and will help make your manicure look more polished.

As for it's household uses listed on curbly.com (such as fixing a stuck zipper), you can substitute mineral oil or even Vaseline.  It is much cheaper and a less wasteful option than using quality olive oil.
