Beauty IQ – 4 Categories of Fragrances

May 28, 9:52 AM

Shopping for a new fragrance? Make sure you know the different categories of perfume, so you know what you are buying. According to ask yahoo.com, Here are the four main types of fragrances:
  • Perfume – Made up of 15-40% perfume concentrates. This is the purest and strongest form of a scented product, which tends to be the most expensive and harder to find.
Think - L’Eau d’Issey Parfum Extract by Issey Miyake - $140

  • Eau de parfum – Made up of 7-15% perfume concentrates. This formula is best for a “Beauty on a Budget” since they are not as expensive, but still has good lasting power.

Think - Euphoria by Calvin Klein - $55

  • Eau de toilette contains about 1-6% perfume concentrates. Also referred to as toilette water. A light scent that doesn’t last very long. Unless you are looking for something to instantly (and very temporarily) refresh you, don’t spend too much money on these kinds of formulas.

Think - Secret Garden Collection Eau de Toilette Spray by Victoria’s Secret

  • Eau de cologne is used interchangeably with the term eau de toilette. However, the concoction began as the name of a light, fresh fragrance mixed with citrus oils.

Think - Lucky You Eau de cologne spray by Liz Clariborne $18

When shopping for a new perfume, make sure your skin is free of fragrances to start off. Give your nose a contrasting smell in between perfume testing. Most counters will offer a can of coffee beans to clear your nasal palette.

After spraying several test strips, spray the one you like best and apply it on your wrist. Wait 20 minutes to let the fragrance mix with your body chemistry before making your purchase. The scent out of the bottle could smell totally different on your body and smell even more different after some time has past.
