I've been watching this recession unfold as we all have, but as a member of the food industry, my perspective is certainly different than most. I've heard the complaints from owners, purveyors and waiters. And I've seen the full dining rooms at some of the oddest times in some of the most unsuspecting places. So where is this recession and how are we doing?
A simple look around the restaurant landscape reveals very few closings and a lot of openings. There are no less than four Italian restaurants under construction now. I guess Italian food is kind of recession friendly. Or maybe we've had a secret influx of Italian Chefs flying in under the radar of Homeland Security.
Burgers are going to be the recession of food of the new millennium by the way. There are about half a dozen burger restaurants ranging from quick service to sit down opening within the next few months or already opened.
In short, the restaurant world albeit is not immune to a recession...but it's doing just fine. It's the natural order of things to thin the herd and take a new direction. And that's exactly what is going on right now. There won't be any massive closings or layoff as there gas been in other industries. You won't see McDonald's or Arby's going to Congress asking for a bailout. The bottom line is that no matter the economic climate, we all gotta eat. We just need to learn how to do it a little differently is all.
