Unlucky Friday the 13th: a venerable superstition that has lost credence, possibly because many of us don't monitor any date very closely, sticking mainly with seasons and the exact day vacation starts.

There's nothing wrong with knocking wood, not opening umbrellas indoors or a few harmless beliefs or rituals not supported by evidence or common sense. Until someone exploits them.

Superstition works in a con artist's favor. The less someone believes he controls his own fate, the easier he accepts someone else controlling it with promises of luck, mysterious knowledge and amazing coincidences.

Could the path to losing your shirt begin with believing a chain letter?
