Who knows someone just out of rehab or recovering? Your addict might not be kiting checks or stealing identities, especially if he has a reliable enabling income source, but he might be scamming you into denial.

Here's some potential relapse lies.

After prolonged stumbling, wobbling, falling down stairs, or head-sized holes in the drywall.

I am hypoglycemic and had a sudden drop in blood sugar.
I took a Benadryl for allergies. (Conveniently explaining the bloodshot eyes, too.)
I smoked my first cigarette in a while and got dizzy.

Scamming for pain killers.

I wrenched my back the other day; do you have any spare Percocet?
I have a shy bladder. (After disappearing to the upstairs bathroom, the one with the medicine cabinet.)

Explaining dope sickness/withdrawal.

I just can't seem to get rid of this sinus infection/cold/illness du jour.
I have a migraine. (Particularly popular a few days after an internet package arrives.)

The addict may resent your suspicion as not supportive. But in the recovery process, he will eventually understand why you don't trust him, because he knows not to trust himself.

If you are dealing with an addict, here are a few potential resources.

http://www.ola-is.org/ (online Al-anon outreach)
