The FBI reports a 38 person global con ring bust, with participants from Romania, Pakistan, Portugal, Canada, Vietnam, Cambodia, Mexico and the U.S. Romanian phishers sent out mass e-mails, directing individuals to enter private access information at a phony bank website. They transmitted the collected personal financial data to U.S. contacts through internet chat messages. U.S. conspirators transferred the data to magnetic strips on credit cards and sent out people to test the cards at ATMs, getting balance information on the most promising prospects. After emptying the accounts, they kicked back a percentage to international allies.
The U.S. is still No. 1 in reported phishing sites on PhishTank. A hopeful spin: If scamming criminals can put aside cultural differences to work together, shouldn't the rest of us be able to get along? Heed the FBI warning: Don't respond to unsolicited e-mails or texts EVEN IF IT APPEARS TO BE A COMPANY YOU DO BUSINESS WITH. You can always contact the company later.
