In St. Joseph, Missouri, a shady operator stating affiliation with the local school went door-to-door selling school calendars and uniforms. Trouble is, the school never heard of him.
A similar scenario happened in the Scam Examiner neighborhood, where a magazine seller claimed to represent a University team. Trouble is, saying "no" motivated his babbling about sponsoring another charity, bartering down his donation request as the door shut.
Other ways to find trouble preparing for school:
Anyone offering guaranteed scholarship or financial aid assistance requiring advance fees or credit card information is not legitimate. If you're looking for funding, check with individual colleges, high school counseling offices or websites, or check Collegeboard.com, the organization administering PSAT, SAT, and Advanced Placement programs.
Back to School sales are troublesome, too. Don't see the word "sale' and assume it's a deal. One retailer's advertised sale price (often disguised as a two-for-one) may still be more than another retailer's regular, unadvertised price. Compare/contrast costs through sales flyers or online before you spend. Better yet, let your kids do the math, reawakening summer-atrophied brain cells.
As far as buying dorm packages for the college-bound, understand you are doing it for convenience and not price. Prepackaged items like shower caddies, desk organizers and extra-long sheets are easily found at discount stores for cheaper cost.
