The Empty Stocking Fund is a charity that started in 1912 in Knoxville.  Raleigh Harrison, a Knoxville lawyer, and a group of other citizens, wanted to help the less fortunate instead of sending them to "poorhouses."

The Knoxville News Sentinel has supported and helped the Fund.  Last year, the organization was able to provide 3,500 baskets capable of feeding 8,000 people for a week to those in need.  The goal this year is to provide 3,600 baskets, feeding 10,000, for a week.  The baskets also include toys for children.

"I think the need is so great this year - that is why we wanted to focus on increasing the number of recipients," says Kelly Daniel, marketing coordinator for the News Sentinel.

Volunteers are needed to help fill and distribute baskets.  If you would like to volunteer, you can fill out the volunteer form online.  Volunteers must be 13 years or older.

Donations are also being accepted.  Contributions can be sent by check or money order to:

  • News Sentinel ESF, 2332 News Sentinel Drive, Knoxville TN 37921

Baskets will be assembled on December 18 and 19, from 1-3 both days.  Main distribution at the Jacob Building is December 22 from 7-11 am.  Homebound distribution is set for December 21, from 1-5pm.

For information on how and when to apply to receive a basket, call the Empty Stocking Fund hot line, 865-524-2521.

Several other organizations help to make the Empty Stocking Fund possible.  Variety of Eastern Tennessee donated $30,000 for the purchase of toys.  First Book, a charity that provides new books to children in need, awarded its Cheerios Spoonful of Stories, to ESF this year as well.
