Yes! But not just any dog? Have you met Lucy, part Labrador retriever and part beagle? Lucy is a R.E.A.D. dog. R.E.A.D. Dogs (Reading Education Assistance Dogs®) are registered therapy animals specifically trained and tested for health, appropriate skills, safety and temperament. R.E.A.D. dogs, as well as cats and birds, volunteer with their owners as a team. They visit schools, libraries, healthcare facilities, boys and girls clubs, youth detention centers to name a few.

For only 8 years old, Lucy has quite an impressive resume. In addition to being trained as a R.E.A.D. Dog, Lucy is also a licensed therapy dog with Massachusetts Pet Partners. She started her studies at Syracuse University and then went on to Norfolk County Agricultural High School. Lucy currently works at The Newman Elementary School in Needham with her partner and owner, Pat Howes.

Howes is a 23 year teaching veteran at the Newman Elementary School. Pat is an extremely dedicated teacher and strives to assist children of all ages to “spark” their interest in reading.

Lucy, of course, is a big part of the “spark” that drives these kids. Her gentle demeanor provides her with a valuable gift of relaxing children, as well as adults, regardless of the circumstances. Howes adds, “Just patting a dog lowers your blood pressure.” She also states, “Here at the school, Lucy seems to know when children are unhappy.” Pat Howes favorite words of motivation to children of all ages are, “Do it for Lucy!”

Currently, Lucy spends all day in the classroom. Students meet with her and Howes before and after school to read. They are a huge success! Studies have shown that R.E.A.D. programs can successfully assist your child’s reading and communication skills, building confidence and self-esteem. In stressful, intimidating environments a child’s learning can be shut down. Animals can be ideal reading companions. They listen attentively, they allow children to read at their own pace and do not judge, laugh or criticize. Children are exposed to a loving, fun and curious environment overcoming fears and giving them the desire to learn.

As of June 2009, Pat and Lucy are expanding their services. They will be available to book their presentations and story hours for schools, libraries, groups, associations, and even visiting the elderly, all year long, throughout the area.
Besides group reading, "one-on-one" reading is also a huge hit. Some of their special treats include listening to music on Lucy’s iPod, reading her favorite book by Dr. Seuss, “Hop on Pop,” paw stamps, and of course, Lucy even has a few “tricks” up her own sleeve. Please email Pat Howes for more information at howesfam@comcast.net .
