You probably don't think of seafood when you picture the goods available at the farmers market.
If you are lucky enough to live in the DC area, however, you can find seafood every Sunday at the DuPont Circle Farmer’s Market. And not just from one vendor, either, but from two quality sources.
You’ll find Buster’s Seafood in the back section of the DuPont Circle market. Buster’s is a family-operated business. According to their Fresh Farms Market profile, Jimmy Hogge has been a commercial fisherman since he was thirteen years old. When I stopped by their stand on Sunday they had fresh-caught rockfish, oysters, frozen soft shell crabs and frozen lump crab meat (caught in September).
Just around the corner from Buster’s is Chris’ Marketplace. In fact, if my vague directions don’t get you there, the smell of sizzling crab cakes drifting through the marketplace most certainly will. Chris, the appropriately named owner of Chris’ Marketplace, sources out his Maryland blue crab daily from the best purveyors. Then, he makes his crabcakes without using any filler. Literally, the crabcakes are pure crabmeat (and a little seasoning).
If you do pick up some seafood while shopping at the DuPont Circle Farmers Market, also be sure to pick up some other market items to complete your meal. As for myself, I took my lump crabmeat home and made a delicious seafood gumbo (recipe here.)
