Valentine's Day Flowers (and much more) fresh from the farmer's market

Guys, this one is for you.

Women love the farmer's market.* Really, we do. We dig it. It’s not just that the farmers market is a charming place to buy food and flowers, or that we enjoy the open air experience of oohing and ahhing over fruits and vegetables. The farmer’s market is a social experience completely unlike supermarkets with their fluorescent lighting and elevator music. It feels good- romantic even- to shop at the farmer’s market.

As if all this wasn’t enough reason to take a date to the farmer’s market, just think about how you will look like toting your canvas bag full of fresh produce while you chat knowledgably about the local food movement with other shoppers. Let me help you out with a few adjectives. Confident. Green. Hip.

This is why you should take your special someone on a farmers market date this weekend.

Picture this:
You stroll in to the a pleasant market with a variety of vendors selling their locally grown goods. You tell your valentine that not only are you going to shop with her in this charming place, but you are also going prepare a meal for her with your market finds (stay tuned for part two of this series). As she enjoys admiring some multi-colored carrots, you sneak away to a flower vendor, where you select a beautiful bouquet of fresh flowers. Upon leaving the market, you whip up a wonderful: a) picnic lunch to take to a beautiful DC spot, b) romantic dinner for two, or c) a casual dinner followed by a movie and popcorn on the cob.

Tips for Success:
1. Carry cash: It’s a habit most women appreciate in men anyway, and most farmers won’t take credit cards.
2. Bring your own bag: You’ll impress her with your environmental stewardship, and you’ll avoid having too many small bags from different vendors.
3. Do you know what the ladies dig even more than shopping at the farmers market? A man who cooks. Check back tomorrow for part two of this series: farmer's market meal ideas for your valentine.

* Disclaimer: There may be a small percentage of women who would not enjoy a date at the farmer’s market. The Farmer’s Market Examiner will not accept responsibility or liability for any Valentine’s Day catastrophes resulting from taking the wrong woman on this date. The Farmer’s Market Examiner would also not like to meet this woman.

Don't forget to check back tomorrow for part two of this series: farmers market meal ideas fresh from the farmer's market for your valentine.
