I have been getting a lot of questions about the Examiner.com and wanted to clarify just what Examiner.com is.  Since it is growing, new Examiners are needed and you may want to know a little bit more about the company.  I contacted Jason Stone, my channel manager and asked him a few questions;

Q.  What is your role with the Examiner.com?
A.  I'm one of the 11 channel managers at Examiner.com who are responsible for guiding and growing the 25 channels that comprise the site. I, personally, manage the Home & Living, Style & Fashion and Pets channels. At this time, there are about 230 Examiners in my three channels, but that number is growing very quickly.

Q.  When did the Examiner.com Launch?
A.  In its current form, Examiner.com launched in April of 2008. Prior to that, the Examiner.com site was part of the Examiner newspapers, with whom we share a parent company.

Q.  What makes the Examiner.com so unique?
A.   In a word, localization. There are 60 different "editions" of Examiner.com, one for each of 59 cities across the country, plus a national edition. When visitors comes to Examiner.com, they automatically land on the edition that is closest to them geographically. Most of the articles they see will be from Examiners who are in their area, providing relevant content and useful information specific to their own communities.

Q.  Is the Examiner.com considered a reliable news source?
A.   It's important to make the distinction between a news source and Examiner.com. We do not purport to be an online news agency. This is a misconception we've frequently encountered, likely as a result of our shared roots with the Examiner newspapers. Examiner.com is primarily a source of local information written by a diverse group of contributors who share their expertise on a wide variety of subjects.

Q.  What do you look for in reporters (Examiners)?
A.  First, I would hasten to point out that Examiners are not reporters. They are, in a sense, subject matter experts who are eager to share their knowledge with their audience. We currently have nearly 2,300 Examiners writing for the site with literally hundreds more applying each week. We look for writers who are passionate and knowledgeable about both their topic and their communities. We look for solid writers who are web savvy and understand the difference between writing for print and writing for the online medium. And we look for people who are excited about sharing their expertise, getting exposure and having fun.

Q.  Is it true that Examiner.com is one of the top 400 websites?
A.   The short answer is yes, though it depends on the source. Quantcast ranks us within the top 400, as does Media Metrix, who are probably the two most "important" website evaluators. Our goal is to be a top 100 site by the end of 2009.
