In the interest of saving money without skimping on the quality of care our pets receive, I have a product to share with you. Have you ever noticed a display of rolls of dog food at your local pet store? They come in many brands, flavors, special formulas, and sizes, and they’re very reasonably priced. They keep for months - longer in the fridge or freezer, and these rolls of food are very versatile.

For aging, ill, pregnant/new mothers, picky eaters and any other dog that needs encouragement to eat or to gain weight, these rolls of dog food can be grated with a cheese grater or crumbled onto the regular food. The rolled foods are very smelly and enticing to dogs, and the small crumbs over kibble can help encourage dogs to eat better. An every day example of when this might come in handy is when an owner travels and the dog refuses to eat in his or her absence, often adding this sort of thing to the food will get the dog eating again.

This food can be served as a meal for dogs with allergies, dental problems that don’t allow them to chew well, or just as part of a balanced diet.  It's so meaty, even my cat demands it as a treat!  It can also be cut up into strips or squares and given as snacks or treats.

For training, these rewards are highly motivating to most dogs. They can be used to help improve compliance around distractions. I often use them to help distract my youngest dog when guests come to the door during the first few moments that are the most exciting- when she is most likely to misbehave. These treats keep her attention on the obedience cues I’m requesting of her while the guests have the opportunity to come in and get comfortable.  Not just any treat could keep her attention during such an exciting time.

I know there are many more cost-effective pet solutions out there, and I'd love to hear from the readers, so please chime in!  How do you shave pennies off without sacrificing quality in pet care?
