This puppy was rescued from the pending slaughter of free roaming NWT dogs

Hundreds of dogs running loose in many communities in the Northwest Territories are doomed to be  hunted and slaughtered in a massive cull.    Local SPCA  president Sarah Hunt, says that in addition to the cull, bylaws have been passed in several communities allowing residents to shoot any dog seen running at large.  These friendly, family dogs and puppies are often pets that are turned out to face the elements when their owners decide they no longer want them.

Funding challenges have made it impossible for the SPCA to establish a shelter to house dogs or other animals.   The North West Territories SPCA has received no funding from any source other than private donations, and is struggling to provide vaccination and spay/neuter programs.  While the Edmonton SPCA is going to house some of the puppies, a desperate plea has gone out to other animal welfare agencies to house and find homes for these animals.  If you can help by fostering or adopting a dog or puppy, transportation can be arranged.  If you can offer financial assistance, or would like to voluteer  to help ensure that northern dogs are treated humanely contact the NWTSPCA   867-669-0068 or send an email to Sarah Hunt the by clicking: NWTSPCA.
