Consumers and animal activists are questioning IHOP’s decision to continue using eggs from battery cages, when others in their industry are switching to cage free. Due to consumer demand, restaurant chains like Burger King, Carl’s JR., Denny’s, Hardees, and Wendy’s have all begun to make the humane transition to cage free eggs.
The Humane Society of the United States is campaigning to convince IHOP to switch to cage free egg suppliers. Wayne Pacelle, President and CEO of the Humane Society of the United States argues
"Given consumers' overwhelming opposition to battery cage cruelty and the growing corporate movement away from supporting this particular abuse, there's simply no reason for IHOP to continue clinging to battery cages,"
"It's important to state clearly that we are against cruel treatment of animals used in the production of food for our restaurants. Our supplier standards go beyond what is required by law to ensure the dignified, humane treatment of animals used to produce the food we serve."
