Many Sociologists define human generation spanning between twenty and twenty five years, naming each successive generation to suit the present society.

There is an offshoot spawn of Generation Y and Z, what I like to call Generation Free, a generation of ID and self entitlement. This story is about them and though not entirely their fault, certain aspects of their recent  activities need a reality check.

Vancouver, British Columbia seems to have more than its share of Generation Free than any city in Canada. Generation Free are ID driven, more political, proponents for social activism and quick to anger when things don’t go their own way, acting more on ID than Ego. Perhaps that explains why crime is rampant amongst some Generation Free gangbangers who feel entitled to take your stuff, including your life without remorse and get upset when home becomes a 4 x 8 cell. These Generation Free of the criminal element feel laws are more of a guideline than rules set by previous generations, with some in the BC Justice system who are inclined to agree with them.

Generation Free, unlike the generations before them seem unclear on the concept of the economics of reality. Perhaps it is the fault of the parents of a previous generation who raised Generation Free on the premise that there are no losers in a society that promises everyone wins a shiny trophy for showing up. Many lay the blame squarely on politicians who promise great expectations and rarely follow through once elected, leaving many to believe all Politicians are on a steady diet of ID .

A Vancouverite of Generation Free recently went to the Vancouver Pivot Legal Society to lodge a complaint with the United Nations against Canada for not living up to the 1976 pledge to the United Nations of providing free post secondary education for all Canadians. Apparently our current Prime Minister back in 1976 the Right Honourable Pierre Elliott Trudeau of the Federal Liberal Party of Canada were most likely too distracted by their many political promises left undone.  Of course there is also the issue of another political promise kept, that was the 1980 National Energy Oil Plan and the much protested Alberta Oil Sands.  After all how else were the Liberals going to pay for all those promised social programs everyone demanded. A fine environmental legacy left by a deceased Liberal Prime Minister and now a UN education contract based on many false promises by Trudeau for the current Conservative government under Prime Minister Stephen Harper to deal with.

Many, including me perceive this student has buyer remorse once he obtained his university degree along with financial obligations. Granted, education is expensive, but then so is wearing a paper hat for thirty years, without a retirement plan, when you don’t have a degree. Of course being educated now, surely he realized all these expenses on registration day and did not make a stink back then. So ask yourself, If possible in another reality, if allowed, would this person give back his degree for a full refund and exchange it for a paper hat? Not bloody likely when a degree will most likely put his potential annual earnings in the six figures, versus a career of super sizing orders for minimum wage. This is one example of a person acting on his ID, not realizing that free post secondary education  for everyone will cost money, lots of money, huge taxpayer money, including his future taxable earnings.

For example for a free university education to work, universities would have to cut back salaries and services drastically, governments don't have the money, unless they raise taxes, failing this political suicide move. Cutbacks would be the only way to even subsidize post secondary education. These cutbacks would affect your Professor's salaries and salaries of support staff all the way down to the lowly person with the paper hat in the university cafeteria. I would be inclined to think your Professor and all staff would go elsewhere for greener pastures and rather quickly. Do you think textbooks and other ancillary items would be cheaper? Somehow I don’t think textbook publishing houses would be inclined to reduce their prices.  Clearly this person and the Pivot Legal Society have never witnessed Russia's failed socialist experiment in free post secondary education resulting in street cleaners and university trained surgeons being paid the same wage, about $30  dollars a month in order to pay for all the social programs under the socialist doctrines. Certainly not an incentive for one to get a degree.

Another recent example of Generation Free is activists marching on their ID, demanding free or affordable housing in the downtown core. Who do you think should pay for this free or affordable housing? Many homeless move to Vancouver from all across Canada for it's temperate climate, resulting in more people needing more housing in an never ending cycle.  One day, and one day soon downtown Vancouver will be a city of ex-homeless and no taxpayers.  Homeless numbers are multiplying every year, we can ill afford Mayor Gregor's pipe dream to eliminate homeless unemployed giving homes for all.  Not when they keep coming in droves and no taxes to pay for it.

Affordable housing should be subsidized for the lower wage working class families, I have no argument there. Many activists I see time and time again standing on the corner of Main and Hastings Street seem to think life should be a beer commercial. Panhandling isn’t work, neither is protesting.  The death of homeless person under freezing conditions resulted in protests and outcry for more homeless shelters, once implemented, front line workers were told to force the homeless to use the shelters if there was a chance of freezing to death. This resulted in an outcry and protest of the same groups stating they have a right to refuse to go to a homeless shelter. The government go on to spend millions on new shelters is it any wonder governments at all levels are confused?

On the subject of Transit services, many Generation Free feel transit should be free for everyone as their god given right. Little regard is given that without taxpayer money, transit would be non-existent. Subsidized transit, much like subsidized housing and university tuition would result in loss of wages and services for those in the industry and government, thus a reduction in taxes collected from these wages.

Wages, another issue where Generation Free feel self entitlement and one political party in particular states, if elected, would raise the minimum wage to $15.00 an hour, with welfare payments to double.  Certainly this concept if ever law would result in products priced out of their hands, with Dollar stores becoming Fifteen Dollar stores and Walmart merchandise being priced closer to Holt Renfrew or Saks Fifth Avenue products.  Again, not your finest hour.

For some in Generation Free, welfare seems to be a career aspiration, than a stopgap measure in this economic environment. Both ideas above if implemented would have taxpayers revolt.

Environmental Activism

Generation Free, amongst other previous generations demanded environmental measures against global warming and climate change. Surprisingly the provincial government agreed and issue a carbon tax against the citizens of British Columbia to help pay for their demands. Once this carbon tax was implemented, the outcry over taxpayers of British Columbia to pay this carbon tax every time they went to the gas pumps was deafening, with many demanding the recall and defeat of the current government.   Most Generation Free remains silent on this issue as it doesn’t affect most of them.

There was an outcry to use biofuels, such a ethanol made from corn. In my opinion genocide, when the starving of the world must compete for food to fuel your car. Again, not your finest moment.

Vancouver's Generation Free and their cause to save the planet came in another protest called the Vancouver Critical Mass bicycle ride. This protest was held one day a month in the downtown core in their quest to bring attention that vehicle emissions are a detriment to the environment.  This cause is clearly lost on the thousands of Generation Free cyclists who choose rush hour traffic to make a point moving at a snail’s pace, congesting the streets in the downtown core with thousands of vehicles behind them slowed to a crawl, resulting in three times as much more pollution when a car is at near idle.  The Generation Free environmental message is clear; vehicles pollute the atmosphere much more when thousands of cyclists are in front of them in rush hour.

On the other hand Generation Free Environmentalists believe it is okay to pollute the atmosphere during the annual downtown marijuana festival, where thousands light up en-masse as a group onthe steps of the Vancouver Art Gallery amongst the non smokers and tourists, the billowing smoke could be seen throughout the downtown core for a mile, with helicopters flying high overhead reporting smoke aroma in their cockpits. This regardless that the same Generation Free and the City of Vancouver regard those who smoke cigarettes in public places like outside the steps of the Vancouver Art Gallery will be fined anywhere from $100.00 to $250.00 as the city feels cigarette smokers akin to being worse than Hitler or a Walmart CEO.  Is it any wonder Generation Free are confused and treat our laws as guidelines when smoking bylaws are all semantics on the type of smoke you light up?

In ending, can all the blame be put on Generation Free, when the world rewards those solely on celebrity cachet and good intentions, such as US President Barak Obama’s recent Nobel Prize win, in which even Obama was gob smacked, especially since the nominations for the Nobel Prize closed two weeks before Obama took the presidential office. Previous to Obama’s Nobel prize win another celebrity ex US vice president Al Gore garnered a Nobel Prize solely on their speaking abilities on a movie called The Inconvenient Truth, based on the research and scientific study performed by others, though some facts were erroneus according to many leading climate scientists. None the less it should be the researchers who should have been given the Nobel Prize, but were overlooked by a celebrity reading from a script written by others.

What does that say to Generation Free and their progeny where in reality they see no one is Smarter than a fifth grader, but can be an American idol and Marry a Millionaire Celebrity as the Worlds Biggest Loser.

Generation Free, the Inconvenient Truth of ID and self entitlement.
