Many people like to travel during the holiday season, either to visit loved ones or to go on a winter vacation while they have time off of work.  Increased travel demand drives up the price of airline tickets and hotel rooms, but if you plan the right trip, you can actually catch some great deals for certain destinations.

Arthur Frommer's Budget Travel magazine recommends destinations that are not usually classified as wholesome family gathering spots.  Party towns like Las Vegas, that will be high-priced and packed for New Years, are typically cheaper and less crowded around Thanksgiving and Christmas.  If you follow Frommer's best days to fly calendar, you could hit a savings jackpot.

Budget Travel put together a four-day, three-night Vegas trip for just $193, based on a November 30-December 21 date range.  The price was based on airfare from Salt Lake City, Utah, so flying from Kansas City would make it closer to $230, still not bad for a four-day trip.  Besides airfare, the price includes a four-day rental car, fuel surcharges and three nights at the Riviera Hotel & Casino on the Strip.  Click here for more information on this trip.

Planet Hollywood Resort & Casino has teamed up with Budget Travel for another good Vegas deal.  This one will get you four-star accommodations, breakfast, a two-for-one pass to the Planet Hollywood Spa by Mandara, plus a complimentary  bottle of liquor.  Click here for more information about this trip.

If you don't want to go with a package deal, create your own trip and you'll still be getting all the ritz of Vegas for cheaper than other parts of the year.  Spas, resorts and other attractions will all most likely have specials and discounts to take advantage of.  A new, very affordable boutique hotel just opened in May near the Strip that you may want to check out.  The El Cortez Cabana Suites is just across Ogden Avenue from the El Cortez Hotel & Casino, the oldest continuous-running property in Las Vegas.  The Cabana Suites offer ultra-modern, unique decor, and the building's facade looks like it belongs in South Beach.  Bedrooms have apple-green walls and bathrooms are done in Tiffany blue and gray stone.  Rooms start at just $49 a night.
