The People-fueled rumor mill, on hyperdrive this weekend, proved true, verifying that a leading political reporter was correct when he speculated on Sunday that the Obama campaign would announce today that the Democratic candidate will make his speech at Invesco Field on Aug. 28. The switch is on.
Marc Ambinder, writing in Atlantic.com, said “It's going to cost the convention committee a lot of money to make the move, but Invesco Field can handle more than 75,000 spectators and will make a much better picture.”
Democratic National Convention Committee spokeswoman Natalie Wyeth said Sunday night “As for the rumors about Invesco, we have nothing to announce at this time. I think it’s safe to say this will be a Convention week to remember. And I’ll leave it at that. “
Wyeth, who moved to Denver last year from Washington, D.C., won’t comment directly on the reports of convention fund-raising shortfalls, except to say that from “the DNCC’s perspective, prudent budgeting and financial management have always been an important part of our Convention planning – and will continue to be in the coming weeks. The current fundraising situation does present some challenges, but we are working with the Host Committee and our partners to ensure our efforts remain on track.”
Today is the day that the keys to the Pepsi Center are turned over to convention organizers, who will be installing 160 miles of cabling and redoing much interior work, designed to be completed before the before the launch of the historic event on Aug. 25, aimed at crowning Sen. Barack Obama.
Says Wyeth, “pulling off an event of this magnitude requires a team approach – and each of us, from the City, to the Host Committee, to the DNCC has a unique role to play. We remain focused on planning and executing a world class Convention that showcases our nominee, our Party and the best of Denver and the Rocky Mountain West.”
