I know. Once I was playing center field for a collection of softballers known as the "Gloom and Doom" squad, made up of staffers who worked for then Gov. Dick Lamm, famous for downbeat predictions. However, on that night, there was a special visitor -- top Lamm aide Romer. It was determined that the man, a few years past his prime surely, would have to patrol the coveted central outfield grass, in deference to his rank -- and ego, perhaps. The team adjusted. Just to be safe, the manager positioned me and another gloveman very close to the guest player.
No mayhem ensued, though I'm not certain Roy made any plays. He did stay long enough to take his cuts, then left, contented. Still, he had made his point. And so, again, when it was time to provide some sock, Romer found a way -- much to the Obama camp's delight.
So with all eyes looking forward to Denver for the Democratic National Convention, Roy stepped up and swung mightily. Let's see if he rounds the bases with his chosen nominee in August.
