Many people considered going to Sen. Barack Obama's rally Sunday at Denver's Civic Center -- myself included.
However, the official invite cautioned that no bags or signs were allowed -- so maybe that turned some off. Others remembered rallies such as the one held for the Colorado Avs in Civic Center to celebrate the team's last Stanley Cup championship, and while that gathering was energizing -- it was a bit crowded, and could have turned some folks off. And of course there were other activities around town, including the official re-opening of Aqua Golf, to divert folks.
Still, there were enough people who wanted to see the Democratic candidate that an estimated at 100,000 jammed the area, stretching from City Hall to the state Capitol steps -- and beyond. It made the 80,000 who were in Invesco Field for his acceptance speech seem puny. (My niece was there Sunday, and she wasn't able to get within viewing distance of the podium -- but said she enjoyed the gathering.)
Obama himself seemed overwhelmed, according to media reports, as he addressed faithful. During his 35-minute speech, he attacked Sen. McCain: "We know what the Bush-McCain economy looks like," he said. "... For eight years, we've seen this philosophy at work; it's put our economy on the wrong track, and we can't afford another four years to look like the last eight."
Later, another 45,000 or so saw him in Fort Collins.
And for those who didn't see it, there are video accounts, like this one on Youtube.
