The Simon Foundation, a non-profit that provides college scholarships and other educational opportunities to cancer patients, is hosting "Cocktails for a Cause," a fundraising event at Vintage Irving, Monday Nov 16.
The organization, which honors Harvey Simon, who lost his struggle with Multiple Myeloma, was founded by Simon's family. "My son came home one day and said, 'I want to honor daddy,'" says Cathy Simon. "He researched the whole thing, and decided he wants to give back to students who have cancer or are affected by it, because he knows that the hardships and out-of-pocket expenses can be devastating. It can derail plans for college."
The Simon Foundation sets a minimum GPA, along with other qualification requirements, before awarding a scholarship through the school of the recipient's choice. In 2009, the foundation awarded $500 and $1,000 scholarships to a total of six students, attending such diverse colleges as Elon University, Notre Dame, NYU and Navarro College.
"Cocktails for a Cause" is the organization's first cocktail social. "We'd done a fundraiser dinner in Florida a couple of years ago," says Simon. "This seemed like a different kind of angle and venue."
General admission tickets start at $50 and are available at www.thescf.org.
Vintage Irving (below) is located at 120 E 15th Street. The event, which features an open bar (along with signature LeBlon Caipirinhas) from 7 to 8 pm plus hors d'oeuvres, runs from 7p to 11p.
