For the past 15 years, one band has ignited the New England music scene unlike no other with its avant-garde, jazz fusion style of rock & roll that has captured fans of all ages and walks of life. The band I'm talking about is The Slip and they are playing a show at Lupo's Heartbreak Hotel on Washington St. in Providence on November 28th. The progressive rock trio consists of brothers Brad Barr, on vocals & guitar, and Andrew Barr playing drums with Marc Friedman strumming on the bass. They started the band at Tabor Academy in Marion, Massachusetts in 1989 as a student rock band that toured New England prep-school campuses. The founding members of The Slip included guitarist Howard Gould, husband of Court TV anchor Ashleigh Banfield, drummer Mike Johnson, lead guitarist Johnny Meyers, bassist Cain Goettleman, and singer Jack Lewin. They all ended up leaving the band after graduating Tabor in 1990 and 1991, leaving it in the hands of the Barr brothers and Friedman. In the early days of The Slip, different members came and went including singer Sally Taylor, Carly Simon and James Taylor's daughter. After graduating Tabor Academy, the trio attended Berklee School of Music in Boston for a time, but collectively dropped out in 1996 to push their debut self-released album, From the Gecko.
Since their first studio album, The Slip have recorded 3 more studio albums and 4 live albums, including a live performance at Lupo's on June 12, 2004. The band's latest studio release, Eisenhower, came out on November 7th, 2006 on Bar/None Records and even earned the band a spot on the popular video game Guitar Hero with the song "Even Rats" serving as a bonus track. After the release of Eisenhower, the band garnered some success playing festivals like Bonnaroo, South by Southwest, Bumbershoot and the High Sierra Music Festival, touring with My Morning Jacket, and eventually making their national television debut on Late Night With Conan O'Brien with a performance of "Children of December". In 2008, the band toured with fellow Massachusetts native and singer/songwriter Sonya Kitchell in support of her second album, This Storm, which features Brad and Andrew Barr.
So if you're a fan of trippy, psychedelic, jamming, progressive, jazzy, open-ended rock music, then come down to Lupo's on the 28th of November. The doors open at 6pm and the show starts at 7pm, it should prove to be a show that any rock & roll fan shouldn't miss.
