It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas, or at least it will by Thanksgiving weekend, as Boise theater companies prepare for the Holiday season. Performing art groups contribute greatly to kick starting that Christmas spirit with a fairly diverse offering of seasonal stories although at least three theaters will perform a variation on the Dicken’s “A Christmas Carol” theme. Just about all of them will be opening their shows Thanksgiving weekend so you’ll want to make your choices soon and arrange for tickets, especially if you’re the one in charge of figuring out what the “group” will be doing for the company holiday party that doesn’t involve eating & drinking too much in the office break room. Most of these shows are family friendly so pack up the kids & grandparents and take in a live show - not just the latest Disney movie – for a special experience you’ll not soon forget.

While we’ll be going behind the scenes of these productions in greater detail in coming days, here is an overview of the shows Boise’s community and professional theater companies have in their Christmas stockings for audiences of all ages.

BOISE LITTLE THEATER

Boise’s oldest community theatre company is celebrating their 62nd season with a reprise of the live stage version of Jean Shepard’s A Christmas Story which chronicles 9-year old Ralphie Parker’s quest for a Red Rider BB rifle. First performed by BLT in 2007, it was such a favorite with audiences that the company decided to bring it back this year. The show opens November 27 and runs through December 19 with both evening and matinee performances. The theater is located at 100 E. Fort Street next to the Elks Rehabilitation Hospital. Tickets are $11/adult, $9/Student & Senior through the Box Office, on the phone 208-342-5104, or online at www.boiselittletheater.org.

STAGE COACH THEATRE
One of three productions based on the classic A Christmas Carol to be presented in Boise this season, this community theater company takes a look at one of the lesser known characters, Scrooge’s business partner, Jacob Marley. It was Marley who really started it all, as he was the first to visit Ebenezer to warn him to change his ways. This then is Jacob Marley’s Christmas Carol. It too opens November 27 and runs through December 12. The theater is located at 5296 Overland Road in the Hillcrest Shopping Center. Look for the theater between Honk’s & Head Masters. Tickets range in price between $12 - $15 through the box office or on the phone 208-342-2000. More info online at www.stagecoachtheatre.com.

STARLIGHT MOUNTAIN THEATRE

Now in their winter home here in Boise, this Garden Valley theatre company will present another holiday favorite based on a motion picture, Irving Berlin’s White Christmas. You’ll remember this musical starred Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye about a couple of song & dance men who help their former army general get his foundering bed & breakfast off the ground. Great & memorable songs and dance have become part of the fabric of a traditional Christmas celebration. Once again, this production opens November 27 but has a very long run that will wrap up January 9. The theater is located at 1851 Century Way, Suite 3 at Cole and Century Way near the Spectrum (behind Commercial Tire). Tickets are priced at $12/adult, $11/Senior, and $10/children. Contact the Box Office at 208-462-5523 with info on this production online at www.starlightmountaintheatre.com.

PRAIRIE DOG PLAYHOUSE
This community theater group is presenting what could be the most bizarre holiday production. Certainly it will be the most unusual. The X-mas Files comes from an organization that is known for kid and family fun productions. The show opens November 27 and runs through December 27 with evening and matinee performances. The theater is located at 3820 Cassia at S. Latah Street. Ticket prices $13/adult, $10/Students & seniors, $7 for children 12 and under. Contact the box office at 208-336-PETE or check it out online at www.pdplayhouse.com.

KNOCK ‘EM DEAD
A Season of Hope is a mix of skits, readings, and songs to become a favorite of Boise audiences during the holiday season. This community theater company offers a dinner theater experience with catering from Le Café de Paris or enjoy dinner elsewhere and come for the show. Opens December 4 through December 19. The theater is located at 333 S. 9th Street near Front Street. Contact the box office for tickets to just the show or dinner show info at 208-385-0021 or visit them online at www.kedproductions.org.

BOISE CONTEMPORARY THEATRE
While not a full production, this company will present a staged reading of Charles Dicken’s A Christmas Carol adapted by actor, director, and educator Carole Whiteleather. The staged reading features professional actors retelling the story of Ebenezer Scrooge as three ghosts take him on a journey from the past to the future to find the meaning of Christmas through voice, sound effects, and music. This reading will take place at the theater at 854 Fulton Street on December 6 and December 13 at 2pm. The December 6 reading features cupcakes and carols after the show. Tickets are $15 for cupcakes & carols with the performance or $12/adult for the reading, $8/children 4-12. Children 3 & under are free. Call the Box Office at 208-442-3232 or visit them at www.bctheater.org.

MORRISON CENTER FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS
There are two shows coming to the BIG stage. The Best Christmas Pageant Ever arrives on December 4 at 10:30am and December 5 at 7pm. Tickets are a very reasonable $9. Then the Nebraska Theater Caravan rolls into town with their production of A Christmas Carol for performances on December 18 at 8pm and December 19 at 2pm and 8pm. As part of the Broadway in Boise series, this is one of two road companies winding its way all over the country to spread a little Christmas cheer everywhere it seems except Nebraska. For more info on Nebraska Theater Caravan, visit them online at www.nebraskatheatrecaravan.com. The Morrison Center is located on the west side of the campus of Boise State University (near Capital Blvd.) at 2201 Cesar Chavez Lane (formerly Campus Lane). Ticket prices are $45 - $35 - $25 depending on location. For tickets here in Boise, visit the box office or order online at www.mc.boisestate.edu.
