It's time that celebrity extortion got its own category in crime. In a trend that is becoming all the more common, celebrities are having pictures or belongings stolen, and having people either sell or threaten to sell these things to gossip magazines, paparazzi, or the highest bidder.
More extreme cases are when a celebrity's family is involved. One example is actor John Travolta, who, after his son Jett tragically died, suffered as a result of people trying to extort him for money in return for revealing details or lies about his son's death. The case was originally ruled a mistrial, but an appeal is imminent. More recently, Cindy Crawford, the supermodel known for her beauty mark, dealt with an extortion threat by a man who said he would sell a picture of her daughter all tied up and gagged, if she didn't pay him. That man turned himself in to authorities in Germany today.
The latest star who has suffered as a result of these hurtful and criminal attacks has been Sarah Jessica Parker of Sex and the City fame. In order to have their twins, Parker and her husband Matthew Broderick used a surrogate. This woman, Michelle Ross, was the subject of a gross abuse of authority by the police chief in her hometown in Ohio, who broke into her house and took personal items that pertained to the surrogacy, and tried to sell them to the media.
According to MSN entertainment, today, a paparazzo by the name of Justin Steffman, testified against Chief Barry Carpenter, saying that he tried to sell items such as ultrasound photos and a plaster cast. If convicted of all charges, including burglary, receiving stolen property and theft in office, Carpenter would face over 21 years in prison.
