Have you ever wondered what it would be like to visit the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican in Rome? Do you dare to be overcome with humility and awe as you stare unto the heavens and decipher the panels that tell the story of man? Well, when you experience in person the majesty of Michelangelo's masterpiece painted on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel, you’re overcome with these profound feelings and more. It’s truly indescribable!

A visit to the Sistine Chapel usually starts with a guided or self tour through the entire Vatican Museum and its various rooms showcasing the works of the masters over the last 2,000 years. It is only after you discover the masterpieces that have stood the test of time and follow the tiny signs on the walls that read La Cappella Sistina or Sistine Chapel, that you are ready to enter what is sure to become the crowning point of your visit to the Vatican, the Sistine ceiling!

Once you stand on the threshold and gaze unto the heavens, you find your breath is literally taken away. Starting from just above the Michelangelo's Last Judgment at the back wall behind the main altar, the entire story of Genesis unfolds with three panels that tell the story of the creation of heaven and earth; followed by three more that depict the rise and fall of man with Adam and Eve; and finally, the last three that tell the story of the sin of man with Noah. Surrounding these nine panels, Michelangelo painted Prophets and Sibyls who foretold the coming of the Messiah. And, in the four corners are panels or spandrels that depict the salvation of the people of Israel. Finally, the remaining panels and spaces in between are adorned with architectural elements and the Ignudi or twenty nude figures that appear in extremely contorted positions.  Imagine the hand of Michelangelo, guided by divine inspiration over 500 years ago, designed and painted one of the most renowned and recognizable masterpieces in the world!

This is but a brief introduction to what you’ll discover upon your visit to the Sistine Chapel. Before you go, make sure you check the times that the Vatican Museum is in operation during your stay because their schedule fluctuates dramatically. One suggestion for you to consider is a guided tour through the entire museum, guaranteeing your entrance and enhancing your experience with the knowledge and background of everything you’ll see. Most importantly, don’t plan on taking photos or videos once inside the Sistine Chapel because upon your arrival, officials will ask you to refrain. Don’t worry, there are plenty of books and postcards that convey the majesty in the most amazing detail that most cameras won’t capture anyway.
