Today is American Cancer Society’s Great American Smokeout Day. The group encourages people to stop smoking cigarettes for the day…. and hopefully forever.
Research has shown that smokers who quit are most successful when using 2 or more measures including nicotine replacement products, prescription medication, counseling, help from smoking cessation groups, and support of family and friends. Advocacy days, like the Smokeout, also help by showing tobacco users quitting is a healthy option and that they are not alone when looking to stop using tobacco products.
The Great American Smokeout Day began in California in 1976 and was adopted nationally in 1977. The Smokeout has been credited with changing America’s attitude about smoking. Many community programs and smoke-free laws have been enacted and are now saving lives.
The American Cancer Society estimates that there are 43 million smokers in the United States. Information on the ACS website states, “Tobacco use can cause lung cancer, as well as other cancers, heart disease, and lung disease. Smoking is responsible for nearly 1 in 3 cancer deaths, and 1 in 5 deaths from all causes. Another 8.6 million people are living with serious illnesses caused by smoking.”
For more information and support, smokers are encouraged to visit the American Cancer Society website or call the stop smoking hotline at 1-800-ACS-2345 (1-800-227-2345). Next
