There were more than a few folks around town saddened by the dismissal of The Supreme Court from the old Adams Mark. The late-night scene at this bar and cafe was a little too much for hotel guests, apparently. Needless to say, the bar was essentially forced out when Sheraton took over the management of the property.

All you need is a room-temp Smithwicks ale to get over it.

The Supreme Court's closing created an opportunity for an Irish lad, Paul Maye, owner of four pubs on the other side of the pond in Northern Ireland. He and partner Tom Cronin poured millions into renovating (including a $70,000 beer storage room) the corner spot on the 16th Street Mall into Katie Mullen's Irish Restaurant and Pub, and the result is nothing short of remarkable.

Not that this is too surprising: their bars have earned various awards including being named Pubs of Distinction in Ireland, a country with as many pubs as Boulder has Subarus.

Katie Mullen's is no exception. It is an absolutely beautiful pub, with four separate bars, nearly 12,000 square feet of space and a nice mix of old-world charm in the form intensely crafted wooden bars and trim, and modern feel with flat screens tastefully hung on most every wall.
 

It's elegant and sets expectations for the kitchen pretty high. Yes, I say that knowing this is an Irish establishment we're talking about (baked fish pie anyone?). If you're scratching your head at that thought too, don’t knock it until you try it, which I plan to do tomorrow evening during Kate Mullen's official Grand Opening Party. A selection of appetizers will be served along with plenty of cocktails and beers; for $25 you'll get to see whether the food matches the decor.

And proceeds benefit the Friends of the Denver Fire Department, so you're doing something good for the community and enjoying an extended happy hour. The nonprofit recently was awarded a highly competitive federal grant to purchase life-saving protective gear for Denver’s firefighters. Now it needs to raise $57,000 in matching funds before it can access the federal money. So even if you cannot make it to Katie Mullen's, donate to a good cause.
