Social networking is here to stay so the best strategy for jobseekers is to embrace and capitalize on these new(ish) tools. Before promoting your social networking campaign to potential employers, make sure that your online reputation is squeaky-clean and professional. If you're just dipping your toe into the social networking water, the two easiest sites to navigate are LinkedIn and Twitter, because you have 100% control over the content. Do everything you can to get lots of recommendations on your LinkedIn account. (Insider secret: the best way to GET a recommendation is to GIVE one first!) Create a snappy headline that promotes you for your next job. For example, don't just say, "Seeking my next opportunity in Healthcare Sales", but rather, "Multi-Million dollar closer and negotiator, looking to boost revenues in the Chicago Healthcare market!" Technically, both of those say the same thing but which person would you rather interview? Once this is done, you want to promote your LinkedIn profile on your resume. Add your customized address to the contact section, or include the following sentence to the end of your summary statement: 'Online profile and professional recommendations can be found at Linkedin.com/in/YourName.

Moving on...

Twitter is a great tool to launch your job search, when done the right way. First of all, you want to follow people in your chosen industry and at companies that are on your targeted list. You also want to follow a few career experts (www.twitter.com/ResuMAYDAY, for example) who will throw out nuggets of advice that may help you in your search. At the same time, you want to be posted actively about your own skills and the companies that you've chosen to pursue. Also 'twit' about things going on in the industry - trends, leaders, and current news...all with a positive voice. Position yourself as an expert in your industry and people will listen! I don’t advocate adding your Twitter account to your resume but you can link your Twitter account to your LinkedIn profile. Both of these sites can work well for you hand-in-hand.
