8. Write everything.

Start with what you’re good at, and what you really enjoy. Learn your medium and hone your abilities. But once you become confident, branch out. Experiment with different formats. Some ideas work better in other formats than the one you’re experienced in.

What might make for a lousy novel could be a compelling short story. You might find that you have latitude in one medium that is lacking in another. This gives you a greater creative arsenal and makes you a more effective writer in the long run.
