1. In order to be a good writer, you have to write. This might seem like an incredibly obvious statement, but it also happens to be very true. The more you write, the better you're going to become, and the more aware you'll be of your own voice and style. I wrote for years before I realized that I was trying to copy the styles of people I admired. That knowledge allowed me to relax, to pick up the things I liked about other styles and add my own touches to create a personal style. But that wouldn't have been possible without lot and LOTS of writing. It's also helpful to be able to look back on things you wrote years ago as a way to monitor how far you've come. I've always felt like my writing has been pretty static, but looking back on things I wrote ten years ago, I realize just how much I've grown. |
