In January, 2009 the nation ushered in a new administration with high hopes and promises of change. Yet, after ten months of democrats gaining control of the White House and achieving a nearly “filibuster proof” congress, the nation has had both sides complaining about many issues that we face today.
What once pulled people together and united the efforts to make a change in Washington, have given way to apprehension and unanswered questions as to why the nation is still faced with huge problems regarding the afghan war, economy and joblessness. Have the issues themselves been too overbearing for one administration to fix and repair in such a short time, or has the Obama administration made “mis-steps” toward finding the answers to these many unpopular and unprosperous issues facing the nation?
Looking back at the polls in November 2008, then-President-elect Obama held a 53% approval rating compared to a 40% rating for McCain. Now, as some of the most recent off-year election returns are coming in, it is providing a new glimpse of the Democratic armor as having some chips and tarnish being unveiled. The most recent outcome for the Virginia gubernatorial race has seemingly been awarded to the republican candidate, Bob McDonnell., making him the first republican to hold this office in 12 years. The next big state to find a turn in attitude toward the democrats is New Jersey where Chris Christie, a republican, looks to have won the governor position over democratic incumbent John Corzine.
Clearly, there are questions to be asked and answered on both sides of these two political parties. Has the constant barrage against the democratic agenda, waged by the republicans, been the reason for these big wins in historical democratic territory? Are there more changes like these in store for the Obama administration for the upcoming 2010 elections? It may be a shot in the arm for the Republican Party, but the shot can go both ways. The democrats have been given a chance to review their policies and look at the nation’s mindset and dig deeper to find the correct moves and answers in the upcoming months.
