Each time there is a mass murder I pray for the families of the victims, then I wish somebody in that sheep pen had been carrying a concealed weapon. In the 1950's the United States and the Soviet Union were locked in a cold war. Both sides knew that the other one could kill them and the whole planet in a nuclear exchange. It was called Mutually Assured Destruction, or MAD. Neither side was willing to destroy themselves and the planet to kill the other. A society in which anyone could be, and many are carrying equal weaponry tends to make a very civil society. Even if the perpetrator intends to kill him or her self at the end of the melee, it would be discomfiting to know someone could ignominiously shoot them in the back as they were killing those in front. In fact, hearing any shot originating somewhere else, the murderer has to slow down and recalculate the assault: Where is the defender? Is there more than one? This gives valuable time to the victims that might be enough for the SWAT team to arrive.
It is patently clear that in America, it is impossible to wring all the guns out of the country. It is hard enough for an army of Secret Service people to check for weapons for a presidential rally, taking the better part of a day to populate a stadium for a brief period of time. That method simply will not protect us. Murder is an in-your-face crime. Personal protection is the best response. Most of us are rational, civil, law-abiding people. No harm comes to society from practicing our 2nd amendment rights and criminals would carry guns regardless. The gun control crowd says regular folks are too stupid to evaluate the threat around them, that they will get into a shoot-out over a parking place. That hasn't happened yet. I think anybody can tell when a stranger pulls a gun and begins to shoot at them that it is time to defend themselves. Time and again, cities, counties, and states that have moved to allow for easier gun ownership and concealed carry show that time and again the violent crime rate goes down in that jurisdiction. On balance, an armed sheep pen is a safe sheep pen.
