All the Washington area foodie brass were in rare form Wednesday night at Capitol Food Fight 2009. The annual fundraiser for DC Central Kitchen featured an Iron Chef style cook off between Top Chef Las Vegas contestants Brian Voltaggio (Volt) and Mike Isabella (Zaytinya), joined by Michael Mina (Bourbon Steak), Tracy O’Grady (Willow) and defending champion Barton Seaver (Blue Ridge). The judges for the event were José Andrés, Anthony Bourdain, Eric Ripert and Carla Hall. More than 50 area restaurants took part in the event serving small bites, beer, wine and cocktails for the attendees that shelled out $175 to bear witness.
The night included a surprise battle between former Top Chef contestant and local caterer Carla Hall and Hell's Kitchen winner Rock Harper. Anthony Bourdain and Jose Andres filled in as sous chefs. Carla Hall narrowly defeated Rock in the impromptu battle with the crowd favoring Hall and Bourdain's foie gras and fresh local pears (they were the secret ingredient).
In the main event, Michael Mina took the title. Touted as the only visiting chef, his fairly new restaurant at the Four Seasons in Georgetown, Bourbon Steak, features some of his title worthy cuisine. Mina narrowly defeated two-time returning champion Barton Seaver of Blue Ridge. The secret ingredient for the final faceoff was coquitos (baby coconuts; in case you didn’t know!)
