Traditional wrestling was in short supply on Monday Night Raw this week, as WWE handed over hosting duties to championship boxer Ricky Hatton. This was a great idea on paper. The show took place in Sheffield England, so Hatton’s presence gave the show a local flavor. Boxers usually thrive in a wrestling environment. Unfortunately, Ricky Hatton had no idea what he was doing.
The opening segment was particularly brutal, as Hatton attempted to trade barbs with Big Show and Chris Jericho. Jericho was in fine form, using elaborate language to insult Sheffield’s working class reputation. He was getting decent heat, but it stopped the moment Hatton gave his rebuttal: “You’re in England, so speak English.” Hatton sounded like he was reading lines in a school play. When he informed JeriShow they would be wrestling D-Generation X, it was obvious that he only had a vague idea of who the main players were. DX came in to make the save, but the segment was dead.
The main event was decent, but predictable. Jericho was “accidentally” knocked out by the Big Show, causing Shawn Michaels to get the pin. JeriShow have been bickering over the last few weeks, which means they will probably break up at Survivor Series. This would be a mistake, because Jericho and Show have real chemistry together. The dynamic between them is reminiscent of Brett and Buzz Sawyer; the big man protecting the little man.
Elsewhere on Raw:
• Alicia Fox defeated Kelly Kelly
• Sheamus defeated David DeVille: WWE’s decision to book Sheamus as a monster heel is paying off. The gasps were audible as he dismantled his opponent.
• Evan Bourne defeated Jack Swagger: Swagger claimed that he would be undefeated for the remainder of the year, but got dispatched by Bourne in three minutes.
• Ricky Hatton defeated Chavo Guererro: in a boxer vs. wrestler match.
• Randy Orton defeated Mark Henry.
Next week Raw will air live from Madison Square Garden with guest host “Rowdy” Roddy Piper.
