The art of garbage: Blast Works

Blast to your heart's content

In the search for Innovation with a capital “I”, sometimes we miss the little pleasures of  the simple improvements of “innovation’”.

Blast Works is the sort of game we’ve played before. Fly around on the screen, dodge enemies and their bullets and shoot enemies with your bullets.

But Blast Works is a bit more fun than that because to two clever innovations. First, every time you blow up a bad guy, if you catch his ship before it falls off the screen, it sticks to your ship. Like an interactive Sanford and Son, you accumulate a huge ball of reusable garbage, with every gun, cannon and laser from your opponent’s ships adding to your arsenal. It’s completely unwieldy, but it doesn’t matter. All that junk you collect also acts as a shield.

And when flying around and shooting gets tiresome, the game switches into a more artistic mode where you can build your own levels, enemies and weapons. Fidgeting with the editor using the Wii controller takes some practice. But it’s a relatively simple affair to mess around with what the game gives you or get your design freak on and make your own stylized shoot ‘em up. Online, you can trade with others and download new creations.

A revolution in gameplay? No. But a a small step forward, none-the-less

Blast Works: Build, Trade Destroy: $39.99 for the Nintendo Wii. Rated E for Everyone.
