Why E3 Doesn’t Matter Anymore
POSTED July 22, 5:07 PM

Famous comic book videogame creator lectures.
For 15 years the Electronic Entertainment Expo has reigned as the big date on the gaming calendar. Hyped up, hysterical with engery and promotional excess, E3 bragged about the growing videogame industry every year with more elaborate chest thumping.

Until the last two years.

In an effort to scale back the Caligula-level excess, the show’s organizers shrunk the event from a reported 80,000 down to about 5,000. And the enthusiasm for the event went with it.

Will there be an E3 in the future? Maybe.

But already other conventions are working to steal the thunder . Take for example, the San Diego Comic Con.

Who is giving a banner keynote address this year? Non other than Will Wright. And what’s he talking about? Just a little game called Spore.

Why does this matter?

Because the videogame industry recognizes that it needs big press with fans. And in this day and age, that doesn’t mean E3.
