Eulogy for a Gaming God

April 23, 5:38 PM

Gary Gygax  When Gary Gygax died earlier this year, dungeon masters worldwide shed a tear.

Gygax was the driving force behind Dungeons and Dragons and left an indelible impression on ever game nerd since original release of D&D in 1974.

You might doubt the influence of D&D on the shape of the modern videogame industry, but you’d be wrong. Check out John Borland and Brad King’s book “Dungeons and Dreamers” if you have any doubts.

And while many goat horn flagons of mead and ale were raised to toast the passing of Gygax the Great, perhaps no eulogy was as appropriate as the recent publication of Gygazxian.

The perfect tribute, this table-top role playing pits three dungeon masters in a competition for the attentions of a single “player.” As anyone who eschewed other role-playing games to stick with D&D can tell you, despite the tawdry call of other games, we stayed true to Gary’s world, and D&Ded our way into adulthood.
