Whether you're closer to Virginia or Maryland, there are websites that can help you locate the freshest food direct from the farm.
Maryland's Best website, sponsored by the Maryland Department of Agriculture, has listings and maps for multiple categories of fresh foods, including fruits and vegetables, dairy and eggs, meats, wine, seafood, grains--you name it. All of the farm listings have contact information and other details, including website URLs.
There is also a list of CSAs (Community Supported Agriculture) that you can join. CSAs provide weekly boxes of fresh fruits and vegetables for a subscription fee.
You can join Maryland's Best mailing list for news about events, recipes and other announcements.
The Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services also has resources available online. From their website you can find a list of CSAs by county, a comprehensive list of farmers who sell directly to consumers, pick-your-own fruit and vegetable farms, farmers markets and even an organic foods directory.
These aren't pretty websites, but they are packed with useful information for people who want to indulge in healthy, fresh, local foods.
