When I first went off to community college, I declared that my major would be Microbiology. I really enjoyed class and lab. We learned how to mix up our own agar agar (a gelatin substance that is made from seaweed and often used to grow bacteria.) and pour it into the Petri dishes. It was always amazing when I would use a wire loop to place a small amount of bacteria across the surface of the Petri dish. I would come to the next class and find that my dish was covered by the little beasties. Although it's a nasty one, one of my favorites was Serratia marcescens, which would produce bright red bacteria colonies.
Today I thought fondly of one of my favorite little "educational films" in the style of those produced in the 1950s. This one was done by Weird Al Yankovic. Since you may well be aware that his specialty is song parody....yes, this is a parody film. Germs (aka bacteria, viruses, and other lovely organisms) are a bit more complicated than the film shows. It's funny, though! He also wrote a parody song called "Germs", in the style of Nine Inch Nails.
