A Red Cross survey shows Americans plan to support charities this holiday season despite a tough economy.
They’ll do it in a couple different ways with 62 percent ready to dig deep into their own wallet for charities. Nearly 40 percent of others are considering donating to charity for another in place of buying them a gift. More importantly, 39 percent of people polled said they’d willingly give up receiving another gift if the money goes to charity instead.
“In this season of hope, the Red Cross is asking people to give a gift that can really save the day for someone in need,” said Gail McGovern, president and CEO of the American Red Cross. “Shoppers doing their online gift-buying on Cyber Monday or at other times this holiday season can make a donation to the Red Cross in the name of someone special.”
Half of the 90 percent of Americans making donations this holiday season will give $50 or more while 25 percent intend to donate more than $100 the American Red Cross says.
Online shopping influence
The Red Cross is making it easier than ever to give charitable gifts online with the “Gifts that Save the Day” online catalog. The catalog allows people to make a donation to provide specific needs for people stricken by disaster, the military or even a family affected by disaster in another country.
Gifts made through the online catalog go toward a Red Cross program area, not a specific project or item. The donation provides assistance where it is most useful within the program area; any remaining money is used where it is most needed.
