“Dear Hero,” started out the card from Brownie Troop 5126, “Come home safe,” wrote a nine-year-old Cub Scout as the youngsters joined the American Red Cross in the Holiday Mail for Heroes program.

Visiting youth energized the national headquarters of the American Red Cross on Saturday. Military families, scout troops and Red Cross families filled a huge meeting room there.

The children were given colored paper, glue, scissors, crayons and magic markers to produce hundreds of hand-made holiday cards. Their imaginations ran free to deliver touching messages to military heroes.

There were snowflake cutouts and snowman drawings. A young girl wrote “you are a star” on the front of a yellow star-shape cutout; she drew a smiling reindeer on the back.

Not far from her, a young boy seemed to understand the depth of the mission. He explained his card was for people like his dad who would not be home for the holidays because they’re in the Army. Inside his card covered with ornament stickers were the words “thank you for saving us.”

There are more than 24 million veterans. With 1.4 million active duty, reservists and guards, tens of thousands of these men and women will not be home for the holidays. Please join these children and thousands of others sending greetings to America’s service members, veterans and military families.

“Happy holidays. Thank you 4 my freedom,” finished the “Dear hero” message from Brownie Troop 5126 in a card. Those cards are now on the way as part of the Holiday Mail for Heroes program.
