Long, grueling weeks at work are the perfect reason to reward yourself with a sweet, simple, and delicious breakfast on Saturday morning. One of the best and cheapest ways (this is a recession time, after all) to pat yourself on the back after a rough week is to submit to one of the most old fashioned breakfast combos to date: the pastry and coffee duo. While this is not the most nutritionally sound choice, it certainly will put a smile on your face and a happy rumble in your belly. Besides, weekends are for getting out of your daily grind, so let’s save the whole grain goodness for Monday to Friday, shall we? Well-rounded breakfasts are wonderful, but the weekend is a time to celebrate one of the nation’s favorite pastimes: sugar consumption.
Whether you are five or fifty five, a pastry in the morning is a wonderfully decadent way to high-five yourself for a job well done. So where to go for the perfect scone or cinnamon bun to compliment your double cappuccino? Mt. Airy’s High Point Café, naturally! Their generous selection of fresh home baked goods rotates daily to fit the changing of the seasons and, of course, owner Meg Hagele’s preference. Though the inventory is always shifting, one thing is certain - anything and everything on offer is divine. Whether you are in the mood for an apricot honey scone or some chocolate ginger brioche, they have it!
For all of the savory toothed breakfasters out there - fear not, High Point has dreamed up a vast world of opportunity for you as well. One of the standard offerings at this dreamy little café is a creative selection of daily quiches, all of which are baked to fluffy perfection. Other savory items, like smoked mozzarella brioche or country cheddar biscuits, are also available. Even the sweetest tooth can appreciate this level of delicious variety!
In addition to the items in the display case, there is also a dizzying selection of custom made-to-order crepes on the menu. With a choice of savory or sweet styles, there is certainly a crepe for any preference. From orange and chocolate (with homemade chocolate sauce, of course!) to spinach, caramelized onion, and chevre, anyone can find their bliss at this well-rounded little café.
Let's not forget: any buzz-worthy breakfast is not complete unless accompanied by a bangin' cup of joe. To satisfy this very important requirement, there are lovely espresso drinks and a killer house blend to boot, thanks to True North coffee beans. If you need a break from coffee (who does, though, really?), there is a house-blended chai tea available, which is a delightful marriage of spicy and sweet.
The next time you find yourself in need of a little weekend morning pick-me-up, why not hightail it to High Point and indulge in a tasty reward?
Note: High Point has two Mt. Airy locations: one at 602 Carpenter Street (at the intersection of Greene St.), and another at 7210 Cresheim Road (at the Allens Lane Train Station). Only the Carpenter location has crepes.
