Entering the game as the underdogs the No. 4 Queen’s Gaels handed the defending Vanier Cup champions No. 1 Laval Rouge et Or a heartbreaking defeat of 33-30 to win the Mitchell Bowl in Kingston, Ontario.
It was Laval’s first real challenge of the season as Queen’s formidable defence sacked Laval’s QB over and over again and held Laval’s potent running game. The turning point of the game happened when Queen’s defensive back Jimmy Allin caught a failed Laval field goal attempt and returned it 120 yards for a touch down.
The fourth quarter was dominated by risky 3rd down gambles made by both teams. In the end, Queen’s managed to hold off the mighty Laval rush to capture their first Mitchell Bowl (formerly called the Atlantic Bowl).
Queen’s will advance to the Vanier Cup for the first time since 1992. They will face the winner of the Uteck Bowl (formerly called the Churchill Bowl) featuring the No. 6 Saint Mary Huskies and the No. 2 Calgary Dinos.
