When comparing the average number of seasonal flu deaths that occur each year to the number of deaths from the Pandemic (H1N1) flu virus, commonly known as the swine flu, there is an obvious disparity. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), approximately 36,000 people die from the seasonal flu in the United States each year. Flu season is in full swing, and  approximately 4,000 Americans have died so far.

Doctor from Canada speaks out

In a recent statement, Dr. David Butler-Jones stated, "the mortality rate from this (H1N1) is no worse than seasonal flu." This statement is contrary to the worldwide hysteria that surrounds the flu virus that has been labeled a "pandemic" and a "national emergency. So what are the real facts?

How long is Flu Season

The CDC, which tracks the flu each year, states that the flu season can peak anywhere from late November to March. The H1N1 flu virus is the dominant strain of flu this year, and may follow the same pattern. Downturns in the numbers of infected people in the last few weeks indicate that the worst may be over already.

How many people usually get sick?

The CDC estimates that as much as 20% of the U.S. population catches the flu each year. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, the current estimated population of the U.S. is 307,948,061. Twenty percent of that population is approximately 61.5 million people who could be expected to get sick from the flu this year. Recent estimates, however, state that only about 22 million people have been infected with the swine flu.
