Robert De Niro is considered one of the greatest actors of our time and is well known for portrayals of deeply conflicted, troubled characters and for his longstanding collaboration with director Martin Scorsese.

Robert De Niro gained critical acclaim in the early 1970's. No stranger to accolades and Awards, he earned his first Academy Award as best Supporting Actor for his portrayal of a young Vito Corelone in "The Godfather Part II" (1974). This was followed by a Best Actor Academy Award win for "Raging Bull" (1980). He was also recognized for his work and received Academy Award nomations for best actor in "Taxi Driver" (1976), "The Deer Hunter" (1978), and "Cape Fear" (1991).

De Niro was most recently honored at the 18th Annual BAFTA/LA Britannia Awards along with Kirk Douglas, Emily Blunt, Colin Firth and Danny Boyle. The event was held at the Hyatt Regency Century Plaza on Thursday November 5, 2009.

During the ceremony, screen legend Kirk Douglas was presented with the Britannia Award for Worldwide Contribution to Filmed Entertainment; Robert De Niro received the Stanley Kubrick Britannia Award for Excellence in Film; Colin Firth with the BAFTA/LA Humanitarian Award; Emily Blunt with the Britannia Award for British Artist of the Year, and Danny Boyle with the John Schlesinger Britannia Award for Artistic Excellence in Directing.

On hand for the event were various invited guests and presenters including Freida Pinto, Claire Danes, Minnie Driver, Benicio Del Toro, Amy Adams and and various other luminaries.

Robert De Niro trivia according to IMDB:

Growing up in the Little Italy section of New York City, his nickname was "Bobby Milk" because he was so thin and as pale as milk.

He is the second actor to win an Oscar for portraying Vito Corleone. He and Marlon Brando are the only two actors to win an Oscar for playing the same character.

His boyhood idols among actors included Montgomery Clift, Robert Mitchum and Marlon Brando. He preferred the darker, more character-driven work of these men to the older stars of Hollywood, for whom their public persona as a star was more important than their immersion into the character.

He and Martin Scorsese were brought up blocks apart in the Greenwich Village area of Manhattan, but never formally met when they were young. When introduced at a party in 1972, the two came to realize that they had seen each other many times but had never spoken.

Accidentally broke a rib of Joe Pesci in a sparring scene in Raging Bull (1980). This shot appears in the film: De Niro hits Pesci in the side, Pesci groans, and there is a quick cut to another angle.
