Christmas parties are fun. Even if it's not quite December yet, Christmas makes for an excellent theme and a good excuse to throw a party in your house/apartment/bungalo/home/etc...
Here are a few ideas for activities to make your Christmas celebration the best your guests will attend this holiday season:
1. Christmas Movies
Duh! Throw Rudolph, Charlie Brown, and A Muppet Christmas Carol up on your screen. Even if it's on silent in the background, your guests will enjoy having the films playing. Don't bother with the true classics (Miracle on 34th, It's a Wonderful Life, etc...) these will only bore people. Stick with either animated or truly B-rated films. Guests would rather have something light-hearted and something they can laugh at. Also, if you have it available, play the movie on a projector. Your 54 inch plasma is nice, but it can't beat a four foot tall Santa Claus on your wall.
2. Christmas Music
Another no-brainer! Once again, stay away from the classics. Throw on some Trans-Siberian Orchestra, N-Sync, or rock and roll versions of your favorite Christmas songs. Once again these variations will be more entertaining for a party, especially if it's particularly early in the holiday season.
3. Take advantage of the California weather.
Not everybody is lucky enough to live in Northern California. So, since we do, let's use it to our advantage! If you have a back yard, get a fire pit going. Serve some hot chocolate or hot apple cider, and remember that movie projector? Aim it at a wall or a sheet outside. Sitting around a fire, sipping cocoa, watching Elf can be more enjoyable than you would expect. If your party does fall on one of those rare evenings when it rains in Sacramento, set up a canopy and/or tarp to keep the outdoor area covered. What people will want to enjoy is the cool weather with the fire to warm them. Don't let a little rain mess that up.
4. Nog-Pong!
Is everybody aware of the popular frat party game "Beer Pong?" Yes? Good.
Take this simple college drinking game, and replace beer with non-alcoholic egg-nog. It may not sound so exciting, but lapping down six plastic cups of everyone's favorite holiday drink will add a whole new twist. My guess is that even the most advanced beer-pong champions will have trouble with egg-nog class numbers 4-6.
5. Decorate like crazy.
Christmas lights are cheap. Head down to Target or Wal-Mart and grab the biggest, cheapest box of lights you can find. Money an issue? have your party just a little bit early and borrow lights from friends and family. Everyone has them, who says they can only be used for one month of the year. Head down to your local dollar store to see what they have. Sometimes you can find hidden gems, like cheap santa hats or reindeer antlers to hand out to guests.
6. Steal ideas from your local tree lighting ceremony.
Set aside a time in your party when you can officially light your tree. Have guests count down just before you light it up. Also, think back to last year's ceremonies and steal some ideas. See if you can get ahold of a fake snow machine, (usually just bubbles that look like snow) anything you can do to add to a Christmas atmosphere is a good idea.
Hopefully with these ideas and a few of your own you can throw an awesome party that will impress your guests. Things like gift exchanges and Santa Watch can be a good or bad idea depending on the date of your party and the size and age of your crowd. The biggest thing to remember is to keep it loose and keep it fun. People go to Christmas parties to have fun. Stuffy living room parties with classical music and turkey stuffing are all too traditional. If you really want to throw a good Christmas party, stay away from that format.
